Concussions and Minimising effects of Sports Injury
Concussion has quickly become one of the most discussed health issues in sport worldwide. On the back of the increased attention towards the management of concussion the AFL has introduced a new rule which bans players returning to the field after a concussion. At Greensborough Family Chiropractic (Tel: 03 9432 4644), our chiropractors include sports injury training (and an ex AFL team chiro) and doctors with chiro neuro rehab (Carrick Institute USA functional neurology training) training. We can check on your injury. We have access to the same concussion assessment tools used world wide for assessing athletes.
But why all of a sudden is there so much interest in concussion?
The increased attention on concussion has resulted from new evidence that has provided a better understanding of the short and long term effects of concussion. This new understanding has allowed for the development of efficient and effective ways in which to diagnose and manage those suspected of suffering a concussion.
What has changed in regards to concussion?
Where once concussion was difficult to diagnose and easy to mask, new tests have made this process much clearer. Concussions tests are no longer only for athletes that are knocked unconscious, and they are much more accurate for children.
Are my kids safe from concussion?
Where once we thought a young brain is better placed to resist damage than an older adult brain recent studies show that the developing brain is actually more vulnerable to the effects of concussion.
How Can Greensborough Family Chiropractic help with concussion related injury?
Concussion usually results in temporary problems that can include headaches and impairments to concentration, memory, judgement, balance and coordination. The acceleration and deceleration of the brain against the inside of the skull is what causes the brain to be irritated and leads to interrupted function.
When left to resolve untreated, current neuropathology research indicates that significant regeneration of damaged neural connections can occur, but the regenerated neural connections are often left in an idle and much less efficient state than those that undergo active care.
