Simple Principles for Healthy Living!
- Oxygen
- Water
- Good poison free foods
- Regular exercise
- Balance and Poise
1. Oxygen is most important to the body for the following reasons:
a. The cells in the body need oxygen in order to generate energy at a cellular level, without oxygen cellular energy diminishes and the cells start to die, under normal conditions the body can only survive some 3 minutes without oxygen.
b. Given how critical oxygen is it makes sense to ensure that we breathe properly so as to take in the oxygen our bodies require.
c. The correct breathing technique uses the diaphragm muscle below the lungs to create a vacuum thus causing air to rush into the lungs and inflate them fully. It is surprising how many people do not breathe properly and hence are not the bulk of their lung capacity. A link to diaphragmatic breathing is provided below for your information.
d. Another advantage of diaphragmatic breathing is that it assists with the movement of lymph fluids through the body, this is important as the lymphatic system plays an important role in the bodies’ immunity to illnesses.
2. Water is the second most important requirement for a healthy body:
a. The adult human has about 60% to 65% water in the body. Babies have about 78% at birth. Without the intake of water the human body cannot survive more than about 1 week.
b. Water is an essential nutrient required in every process in the body. Functions such as digestion, absorption, circulation, excretion, maintenance of body temperature, utilization of water soluble vitamins etc.
c. Daily water intake is recommended at 8 glasses (2 litres/day).
d. Some problems that may be experienced with insufficient water intake include headaches and constipation.
e. Caffeinated and alcoholic beverages contain diuretics which cause the body to lose water.
3. Good foods, free of poisons
a. Foods these days may contain traces of poison as a consequence of use of pesticides and/or contamination of the ground or water they are grown in.
b. It is highly recommended that you choose your sources of food carefully and where possible go for the freshest foods and if possible organic foods.
c. Alcohol and caffeine are known poisons so avoid these as much as is possible.
d. Meats such as red meat, pork and chicken tend to remain in the digestive system for several days this process tends to clog up the digestive system. Meat if eaten should be small quantities and at lunch time.
e. It is recommended that the diet consist of large portions of fresh green salads and vegetables.
f. Fruit tends to be good. It is easily digested and hence if eaten on an empty stomach can quickly move through the digestive system.
4. Regular exercise
a. Healthy Body Healthy Mind!
b. Use it or Lose it!
Are just 2 of many sayings which very simply point out why exercise is very important. So if you’re not exercising at least 3 times and preferably 5 times a week then you may want to do something about it. Consult your chiropractor or other natural health professional and seek some advice if you have not exercised regularly for some time.
c. If you wish talk to our chiropractor (who assisted an AFL team in their premiership year), he will be pleased to assist you on your path to a healthier body and mind. Simply call us on 03 9432 4644 at Greensborough Family Chiropractic, Banyule, Vic
5. Balance and Poise
a. It is possible to be aerobically, flexibly and muscularly fit, yet still to be ‘off balance’. This is why poise forms the first column in your temple of general physical fitness for mental power.”
Some time ago in my reading I was blown away by the simple power of Tony Buzan’s comments in his book “The Ultimate Book of Mind Maps”.
This is what Buzan says in “The Ultimate Book of Mind Maps”:
“Perfect Poise is Necessary for Fluid Thinking, It is the perfect balance of the body, in which all aspects of your muscular, organic and skeletal systems are properly aligned. Of particular importance are the relative positioning of your head, neck, spine and joints. It is possible to be aerobically, flexibly and muscularly fit, yet still to be ‘off balance’. This is why poise forms the first column in your temple of general physical fitness for mental power.”
